The Mekong Delta region is considered a key agricultural and fishery production area of the country, annually contributing more than 70% of rice, edible crops and aquatic products. Implement the program to change the structure of livestock and plants, especially in the rice-shrimp farming area, with an area of rice and shrimp over 211,900 hectares, with an output of more than 84,700 tons, on the basis of effectively exploiting potentials. and advantages have turned the limitations of natural ecological conditions into strengths in the region. Over the past time, many coastal provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta such as Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Kien Giang... have actively implemented programs to effectively operate and manage the model, contributing to improving profits. for producers with an average income of more than 90 million VND/ha.

As for Bac Lieu, since 2001, the province has started to organize the production of shrimp-rice models. The initial efficiency brought from this model is quite high compared to rice monoculture, so the growth rate of shrimp-rice production area is quite fast, from 5,851ha of initial production has increased to 39,578ha in 2020, nearly double 6.8 times compared to 2001 (after 20 years). By 2021, the area of this model will continue to develop and expand, reaching 39,404 hectares, accounting for more than 33% of the shrimp farming area in Bac Lieu province (the average growth rate of area/year is 5.26%). Currently, the total income is over 90 million VND/ha; profit 40 - 60 million VND/ha/year.

Speaking at the seminar, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Pham Van Thieu assessed: In restructuring, the shrimp-rice farming model has increased year by year in terms of area, productivity and added value. This is a sustainable development model, the profit is 15 - 30% higher than that of monoculture of rice; There are many enterprises implementing production linkages. It can be said that the shrimp-rice model is a sustainable, effective, "smart" model, creating clean products, in accordance with the GAP process, helping farmers apply farming measures and prevent epidemics. Less use of fertilizers, pesticides, etc.

At the workshop, many delegates and scientists acknowledged that, after many years of implementing the model, farmers have applied some new technical advances such as: salt-tolerant varieties, improved cropping, and fertilizer use. , microbiological and biological drugs in rice cultivation to serve the shrimp - rice area, especially the area expanding from an inefficient shrimp farming area to implementing a rotation model of 1 shrimp crop and 1 rice crop, for high efficiency; less use of chemicals, pesticides and chemical fertilizers in production.

Signing a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in developing a model of fragrant rice - clean shrimp in the Mekong Delta.

Engineer Ho Quang Cua stated that the development of shrimp - rice is a favorable development, adapting to climate change, but needs specific planning, especially in the stage of water regulation, application of scientific advances - techniques into production, and at the same time it is necessary to guide farmers to apply safe production processes, limit the use of chemical fertilizers and drugs to ensure the correct production process - fragrant rice, clean shrimp. In addition, companies and enterprises operating in the agricultural sector also need to pay attention to the construction of raw material areas and production linkages to both ensure output and help build brands for the production areas. clean rice and shrimp production in the Mekong region.

Speaking at the workshop, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development - Le Minh Hoan emphasized: For the shrimp rice model, in addition to the profit factor, what we need to pay more attention to is the environment and the ecosystem. The production environment is an issue that needs to be studied by the functional sector and businesses because ensuring good environmental issues will stabilize profits. In fact, there is a vast gap between the enthusiasm of scientists, businesses and farmers. What farmers think and perceive about the new model is the most important thing. The crystallization of the model must come to life. Therefore, localities must organize for farmers to have the opportunity to sit down with scientists and businesses to share knowledge about the model.
